7 June 2006: California Governor Proclaims Emergency Over Federal Salmon Restrictions. The Associated Press reported from Sacramento that the Governor had proclaimed a State of Emergency affecting 10 Counties that have been impacted due to a recent decision by federal regulators at NMFS to limit the commercial  salmon fishing season off the California Coast by adopting the reccomendations of the PFMC.

The idea is to limit the take on weakened Klamath River Stocks by curbing commerical take and limiting sport take.

The Daily Triplicate of Crescent City, Del Norte County,California, reported this AP article today on page A3 and quotes the Governor.

The counties listed were: Del Norte, Humboldt, Marin,  Mendocino, Monterey, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz,  Siskiyou  and Sonoma Coounties.

Basically he ordered the State Dept. of Finance to make loan guarantees for affected fishermen for up to $9.2 million total in Diaster Relief Assistance Loans from 3 financial institutions. These are not given in the Triplicate Article. So fishermen still have to take out loans. The decision affects about 700 miles of coastline from Cape Falcon, Oregon to Big Sur, California.

7 June 2006: Senator Wyden of  Orgeon Places Hold on Bill Until Salmon Fisherman Get Help.  In an Associated Press release from Washington, D.C., Senator Ron Wyden  (Democrat from Oregon) is reported to have said that he is blocking the re-authorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation And Management Act until the Senate considers action to help fishermen on the Pacific Coast affected by the salmon restrictions of this upcoming Summer 2006 fishing season.
