7 June 2006: California Governor Proclaims Emergency Over Federal Salmon Restrictions. The
Associated Press reported from Sacramento that the Governor had proclaimed a State of Emergency affecting 10 Counties that
have been impacted due to a recent decision by federal regulators at NMFS to limit the commercial salmon fishing season
off the California Coast by adopting the reccomendations of the PFMC.
The idea is to limit
the take on weakened Klamath River Stocks by curbing commerical take and limiting sport take.
The Daily Triplicate
of Crescent City, Del Norte County,California, reported this AP article today on page A3 and quotes the Governor.
The counties listed
were: Del Norte, Humboldt, Marin, Mendocino, Monterey, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Siskiyou and
Sonoma Coounties.
Basically he ordered
the State Dept. of Finance to make loan guarantees for affected fishermen for up to $9.2 million total in Diaster Relief Assistance
Loans from 3 financial institutions. These are not given in the Triplicate Article. So fishermen still have to take out loans.
The decision affects about 700 miles of coastline from Cape Falcon, Oregon to Big Sur, California.
7 June 2006: Senator Wyden of Orgeon Places Hold on Bill Until Salmon Fisherman
Get Help. In an Associated Press release from Washington, D.C., Senator Ron Wyden (Democrat from
Oregon) is reported to have said that he is blocking the re-authorization of the Magnuson-Stevens
Fishery Conservation And Management Act until the Senate considers action to help fishermen on the Pacific Coast affected
by the salmon restrictions of this upcoming Summer 2006 fishing season. Link to NOAA
